The sports rights market has changed

Stefan Kürten is among those who have been significantly affected by the developments on the international sports rights market. The ZDF’s former Head of Sport has worked for the EBU for 16 years. As the Director of Sports & Business for the European public bidding consortium, he has seen a great many come and go – including countless competitors. What insights can he draw from the current market situation? How does he wish to react? And what options does he even have? We shall discuss all this with him at the SPOBIS Gaming & Media in Cologne.

Why Borussia Dortmund is not investing in eSports

BVB Chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke gave only a curt response when asked about his personal opinion of eSports at Borussia’s AGM in November 2016: “It’s complete shit. Experience has shown that it is well worth not doing everything that FC Schalke 04 does.“ And so the headline was born. No time remained for any explanation or even to address the subject in any greater depth. BVB’s Director of Marketing Carsten Cramer will now make up for this and discuss the BVB’s thoughts on eSports on 21 August. Are there other starting points for a cooperation?

Innovation as part of the conference DNA

It is one of the most innovative sponsorship deals in recent years: as the new sleeve sponsor of FC Schalke 04, Allyouneed Fresh is integrating a chip into the club’s fan jersey. Fans will be able to use the chip to make payments in the stadium – with further offers available in an app. This deal worth €5 million per year is the first in German professional sport for the online supermarket Allyouneed Fresh. The aim is to boost growth of the Deutsche Post subsidiary and the company’s position in what is still a fledgling market.

At the conference Managing Director Jens Drubel will share insights into the strategy behind the sponsorship deal and outline the activation measures the company is planning.

Hackathon with Google, Youtube, Athletia and FC Schalke 04

Imagine there was software that could generate a summary of all the highlights and goals in a live stream in real time entirely automatically. Or an app that allowed a user to commentate on a live stream and make this available to all other users live.

This would create genuine added value for customers – and, at the same time, new marketing platforms. So why don’t we do it then? Get involved in the Hackathon @SPOBIS Gaming & Media!

During this side event, 40 programmers and designers will be set five different live streaming tasks to develop innovative new software solutions for the sports media industry.

Florian Hager: 25 million views in six weeks

In 2015 Florian Hager was appointed founding director of the channel for young people offered jointly by the ARD and ZDF. The two public broadcasters are said to be investing around €45 million in the project every year. 2016 “funk” went live with the announcement: “We are a network with content for 14 to 29-year-olds.” With its formats streamed on YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram, “funk” was viewed 25 million times in the first six weeks, with 1.27 million subscriptions on YouTube and Facebook. Hager clearly knows exactly which content and platforms can be used to reach younger generations – and will share his insights in Cologne.

New “Live Sale” format: ESL meets Telekom

E-sports and advertisers come from two very different worlds and yet they must now attempt to find common ground. To aid in this process, we have organised a very special event format: two of the most experienced representatives from both industries will conduct a “critical sale discussion” live on stage. Andreas Nassauer will act as the company representative interested in learning more about sponsorship and media services in e-sports. As Head of Group Media at Deutsche Telekom, he has managed one of the largest media budgets in Europe for almost 13 years. Ralf Reichert will assume the role of the sales person. The CEO of Electronic Sports League (ESL) is a seasoned expert in the e-sport scene. Having helped to build up and shape the course of the e-sport industry from the beginning, he affords extremely in-depth knowledge.
